Teaching the Bakun Dam..
Understanding Activism

 Materials: Primary literature about the Bakun Dam (or other projects), and its environmental, economic, social implications; secondary literature about environmental activism and social movements generally.
 Activity:

Students adopt the persona of one of the following:
i) a Malaysian environmental activist in Kuala Lumpur;
ii) A Malaysian citizen concerned about the future cost of electricity;
iii) a resident of a longhouse within the reservoir area;
iv) a Canadian concerned about the project.

Prepare an action plan for presenting your point of view regarding the project. Plan would address the following: the targets of your action plan; the forms of communication you would use; the arguments you would use to support your point of view. All aspects of the plan must demonstrate an understanding of the strategies and tactics of activism, with appropriate references to the literature.

 Activity: Compare the opposition to the Bakun Dam (the people involved, their concerns, strategies), with opposition movements elsewhere (e.g. in Canada, China, India, Brazil).

What similiarities, differences exist?

What could any of these opposition movements teach the others?

Are there particular characteristics of movements that exist in opposition to dams, or can they be viewed as part of a larger environmental or social
movement?
